On Friday 18th May, Nicki Minaj will perform at the Hi-Sense Arena in Melbourne for her SOLD OUT concert, SWAGGER will be flying in for the night to put on her amazing AFTER PARTY at The Bottom End.

Onika Tanya Maraj (born December 8, 1982), known by her stage name Nicki Minaj, is a Trinidadian-born American musician.

In just 3 short years Nicki has taken the world by storm. She became the first female solo artist to have seven singles on the Billboard Hot 100 at the same time. Her second single, “Your Love”, reached #1 on the Billboard Hot Rap Songs chart, making Minaj the first female artist to top the chart unaccompanied since 2002. She also became the first female artist to be included on MTV’s Annual Hottest MC List. Minaj was named the 2011 Rising Star by Billboard and her second studio album, Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded will be released this week!

We play her music at each SWAGGER and each time it blows the roof off, so we thought especially as she will be in Australia that we’d have a night dedicated to her… Bring your crazy wigs, luminous makeup and tude as we’ll be droppin it like no other at SWAGGER : MINAJ on Friday 18th May 2012.

THE PAST

Never trust anyone whose favourite flavour of ice cream is vanilla. Performers, gadabouts and Australian queer icons Verushka Darling and Claire de Lune understood this when they started the legendary Home Sundays and Hey Homo dance parties. Ridiculous in the very best sense of the word, with an rainbow kaleidoscope of attractions, curiosities and weirdness that would have made P T Barnum retire in ignominy from his elephant-electrocuting ways. Old ladies knitting, robotic animals, nude men in giant test tubes, Elizabeth Taylor in a wading pool of Paul Newman’s pasta sauce, slaves peeling root vegetables and so much more. You could scarcely believe what was happening when you were actually there and in the more than ten years since the events (t)winked out of existence that sense of incredulity has only grown.

THE PEOPLE

Clearly Verushka and Claire needed to get the band back together. Which they have, recruiting as many of the original creative team, DJs and sundry friends as possible and enlisting a new rhythm section in Australia’s leading gay production company, In The Dark along with the owners of Home Sydney, to create Queer Nation.

THE PARTY

Inspiration for the inaugural party on Sunday 10th June 2012 comes from that most iconic moment in gay and lesbian history: Weimar-era Berlin. A circus of sin, a cabaret of consumption, a dark den of dissipation. With amazing performers and so many surprises you won’t believe your fake-eyelashed eyes. As crazy, indulgent and lavish as anything you’ve ever seen. Or anyone in the Weimar republic saw, for that matter.

Queer Nation is not going to be a breath of fresh air. It’s going to be a hurricane smelling of perfume and champagne blowing across the landscape of Sydney’s queer scene. Which is just the point. Queer Nation is going to pluck the homo out of homogeneity. Welcoming everybody across the LGBT, gender-queer and just-plain-queer spectrum. Muscle boys, freaks, queens, dykes, and a whole bunch of things that probably aren’t invented yet but probably will be on the dancefloor. You will be rubbing shoulders (and maybe some other things) with something like the queer United Nations. Except way, way more fun than that geopolitical snoozefest.

When the Las Vegas nightclub consortium the Tao Group said they were going to open an eighteen million dollar superclub called Marquee in Sydney they knew the gay and lesbian community had to be a part of it. So they went to us. And, by extension, you. We’re going to do this thing right. We will be Sirius, the brightest star in our galaxy. It will be as if everything else in the sky was lit by a single 40 watt tungsten bulb.

Gentlemen: we are sure you are absolutely the handsomest. With a dashing smile, distractingly beautiful eyes and a kind of effortless charm that recalls Cary Grant in his prime. But, you know, updated for now. Cary Grant the web entrepreneur or something. Ladies: Same thing. Except swap out Cary Grant for Jean Seberg.

Because of all of this you are uniquely suited to sup from the cornucopia of earthly delights that Superstar at Marquee is going to fairly slather you in. Like being in the marble bathhouse of the gods, but with cocktails instead of scented oils. Three separate spaces, the main room boasting a 30-foot projection stage and so many goddamn LEDs you’ll have to neck an anticonvulsant just to withstand their sparkly assault. Views of the Sydney skyline so picturesque you’ll want to slap someone. Just because, you know? DJs Kitty Glitter, DJ Booth and Alex Taylor in the main room doing their vocal house thing. Boombox is home to the Swagger DJs takeover- hip hop and r’n'b all night.

The cap on this monument to excess? Bottle service. You can occupy your own table and bottle of whatever whets your particular whistle. You will do this with startling aplomb and class. You think Cary Grant went to the bar for drinks like a sucker? Exactly.

Marquee – The Star Sydney is located on the entire top tier of The Star’s new Pirrama Road harbourside entrance, commanding expansive views of Sydney Harbour and the city skyline. With nearly 20,000 square feet of floor space, the venue is designed to house three distinct spaces within the one venue to cater for different tastes and moods.

The Main Room features a 30-foot projection stage with an LED DJ booth and two dance floors.

In contrast, a stylish library-style room offers an intimate lounge experience, accentuated by a working fireplace.

Venturing further into the venue, club-goers will come across the Boom Box, with a separate DJ, state-of-the-art sound system and outdoor patio. There is also a chill-out area with unparalleled views of the Sydney skyline and a unisex “bathroom lounge”.

What more can be said about the fabulous Honey Dijon. She has rightly taken her place in the music world and one of the most exciting and unique talents today with her innovative and unique sound. She also boasts some impressive accolades from some of the biggest names in dance music from Danny Tenaglia to Derrick Carter.

Based in NYC, born and bred in the Windy City, Honey is known for her unique take on the Chicago sound with inflections of the deep New York underground. In fact, Honey is one of the few dj’s in recent years to defy pigeon-holing. She draws from a wide repertoire of musical styles from old school Chicago House, disco, tech house, tribal, funk, soul, and R& B. She has graced the tables from Ministry of Sound London to Pacha Ibiza, Panorama Bar Berlin, Stereo Montreal and everywhere in between. She has also shared the decks with none other Danny Tenaglia, Derrick Carter, Green Velvet, The Martinez Brothers, Satoshie Tomeii, and Quentin Harris.
